This was a large thing with Troy too. He was very adamant back in the old days about not using IRC because it would take focus away from the board. Even MySpace was the enemy back when that was (well I guess it's still around but only a shell of its former self) a thing. At least he didn't kill it off and just make a FB page/group or something, which he could have easily done if he wanted.

I remember Dollar Dave, he threw a rock at John's car and set the dumpster in the alley on fire when he got kicked out of Mephisto's. Sorry to hear he's still insane, but at least he's sober chemically even if he did trade one crutch for another. Honestly I figured he'd be dead by now. I don't think we're meant to keep friends forever anyway (try as I might, since it still sucks losing them.) All relationships eventually end either through a fight, just drifting apart, or they die. All you can do is hope it's on good terms when it happens and maybe you'll see them again sometime down the line (unless they're dead since there's really no coming back from that.)

Why aliens?
Scary Guy replied to Destroit's topic in Current Events, Science, Spirituality, Politics, Religion & Sociology
That doesn't mean I don't want it to be true though. I think it would be neat to be clear but it's just extremely unlikely. UFO/UAP exists everywhere. Those Chinese spy balloons were UAP at first. The error in logic is thinking that UAP automatically means aliens when the truth isn't anywhere near that exciting. I'm sure many in congress believe in aliens. They also believe in a magical sky daddy who will punish you if you disobey him, so many of them aren't playing with a full deck to begin with. -
I'm very aware of Facebook/similar networks and there's a reason I haven't been on it in years, or Instagram, or Twitte... X, or Twitch, I also left Discord, and while I do browse Reddit I only do so through a third party app without an account (for as long as that continues to work.) Though you're probably talking about the walled gardens turning them into echo chambers which I do agree is a major problem, but you'll get that on any platform where you can ignore those you don't like too (however they don't all actively try to suppress that information like FB does either.) Yes marketing is evil and free is a lie. They make it so you can't live without their services. All your friends are on them, all the events you want to go to advertise on them, all the little bullshit games it has, and FB marketplace has even replaced Craigslist so now people only think scams exist on CL (it still works for me but you need to be careful and know what to watch out for.) I'll be the first to tell you it's bullshit. Do you know how hard it is to be a DJ in this scene when you can't advertise? Not that I should need to promote myself (that used to be the Venue's job) but I have my little network on Signal that I yell at whenever I actually happen to land a gig. Still, the core of all of this is social networking and I try to use mostly open sourced federated apps for that. This and other forums, electronic mail, internet relay chat, Matrix, and Jabber are just a few of the other networks I can be found on. I'm still very much going to watch the videos I found, but I probably already know most of that from other sources. Thanks for the heads up though. There's a reason this place was a wasteland up until two months ago. Troy was pretty much trying to start his own cult near the end. He wanted only the most devoted followers around him and if you contradicted him he'd cast you out. I only survived because I can be very diplomatic but I'm pretty sure he knew how to covertly make me leave and did that because he knew I'd never "bend the knee" (he loved GoT so I figure I should use that phrase.) I think some of those that followed him the most are avoiding the forum because they're probably still on the Discord server, and also because they don't want their illusions shattered about who he was. I know exactly who and what he was, and I don't think he liked that much. He basically became a raging narcissist and started to compartmentalize people from the main group, so a lot of the people who were forced out really didn't deserve it and some probably didn't even fully know why.

Well there really isn't any debate on it. There is either positive evidence confirming or baseless speculation. Unfortunately now with the advent of AI it's going to get much harder to tell the fakes from any potentially real evidence that may be found. As usual people will believe whatever they want though.

Back? Also I hate to break it to you, but this counts as social media too, always has. The only difference is I don't feel like my data is being scammed (even though it probably is by webcrawlers) nor do I get ads shoved in my face. You would get the same thing from a Failbook group. But maybe it's having it in a different format that makes things seem less bad? 1. This is the attitude I like. 2. I've never been accepted and I accept that. I don't get invited to parties or even to hang out 1+1. Except for online, there is no community for me the asshole lone wolf (unless maybe I crash a gathering.) I am happy you will do better than I have though. You seem like a nice kid and deserve it. Honestly that's why many of the people have returned I think, so don't worry we get it. I considered him a friend and even I get it. I'm even pretty sure that's what a few of the posts below are hinting at too. I've typed a bit on that already though. He had his issues, but despite those he built something great for the community for which the community will be ever thankful for. The king is dead, long live the queen!

You shouldn't doubt yourself so much. I've done the same with my unpopular views and just speaking my mind and it really isn't that hard. You just have to not care about what others think, which should be really easy. There's a quote that fits but I cannot remember it as of right now. Something about having the courage to fight for what's right, even if you think it's hopeless. I'll update his when I find it.

Dirty old man harassment thread
Scary Guy replied to n0Mad's topic in Relationships, Pets & Domestic Homelife
I'm pretty sure I'm old enough that I count now. I should go back and offer that cute girl in the stairwell who's young enough to be my daughter some candy. Or not because that's gross. These days I think of this scene (spoilers ahead): -
Tha chi is good, but leave the woo woo energy stuff at the door. There is no reason to add any of that into any martial arts. I also saw something recently about low impact boxing for people with Parkinson's disease. I think that there is something to be said for working the muscles as well as the mind, as it activates different parts of it rather than just thinking. It's also good to keep in shape in general anyway.

Be careful, you're more fragile than you used to be when you were younger. I warn everyone of this. Eventually it's like we're made of glass.

What made your day?
Scary Guy replied to Rev.Reverence's topic in Relationships, Pets & Domestic Homelife
I heard once that curses only work if you believe in them. This is because it's people's own minds that haunt themselves believing it to be true. So while there isn't any such thing in reality they can scare themselves into misfortune. Anyway, glad you're rational (well in that regard anyway :P ) -
She was definitely the lesser of the evils. However people can be against one type of religion while still drinking the Flavor-Aid themselves. Wasn't trying to diminish that either. She basically hosed her own career. If the world were any more of a theocracy she'd probably have been burned at the stake as a witch.

Any Godless Heathens Here? Come Get DAM'd!
Scary Guy replied to Stu's topic in Nightlife, Events & Concerts
This is why I waited to respond as that was very well said. To further expand on this, we know how dropping a tennis ball on the ground will bounce up just about every time (depending on the material it is hitting). To completely understand why it does that though you need to know the theories of physics and gravity, possibly some math too if you want to calculate the speed at which it drops. Is it hitting a solid like concrete or grass or a liquid pond? Children don't even need to know all that background though, all they need to know is that they can drop it, it will bounce, and then they can catch it. Then dopamine will be released by their brain into their system and they will feel good, but now we're getting into biology too. Life is science and it's all around us even if people don't acknowledge it or actively choose to deny it. -
I mean that's IF you wake up, but you're shorter (or at least more so than me anyway) so you do have that going for you, which is nice.

Sort of reminds me of a quote: "There comes a time when you look into the mirror and you realize that what you see is all that you will ever be, and then you accept it. Or you kill yourself. Or you stop looking in mirrors." ~ Tennessee Williams One is letting others define you, the other is defining yourself and coming to terms with that.

Yeah, we used to blast this at the clubs. Still do sometimes: I had a lot of respect for her when she tore up that photograph of the pope, and then promptly lost it when I found out she was still delusional anyway. Though she wanted a united Ireland so she couldn't have been all bad I guess. But wait she wanted Britain to rule over it so I take that back. She suffered from mental issues though so it's not surprising some of her ideals were crazy. No cause of death has been announced, and I don't want to jump to conclusions but it isn't exactly that great of a leap. More of a hop I'd say.

That is good timing. I've done that many times myself. I've done the reverse too though. but I believe it was mostly the former that has happened. Not that I really concern myself with rain. It's the lightning that will get ya! Pretty happy we haven't had worse than that for a long time. But that means the odds of it happening are probably going up.

I hope your kids are okay? But yeah if not absolutely cut out toxic family. Hell that could probably be its own thread in and of itself. I'm lucky to have a family I mostly get along with. Functionally dysfunctional but we made/make it work.
-
Good for you and glad to hear it. As I said in the other thread I hope for the best for you and yours.

I wish you good health for as long as that is possible. For whatever that's worth anyway. Happy to hear you're doing better in any case.
