I don't know if you plan on getting a house or an apartment, but the taxes in Royal Oak suck. Otherwise, I like living here. I've lived here for almost 6 years, and I like it...I-75 and I-696 are right here, which is convenient..*shrugs* good luck with your descision!

I live in Royal Oak, and I love it! Everything you need is very local...lots of great shopping, restaraunts, bars, I love Downtown, Luna's, Comet Burger, the Zoo, Oakland Mall, tons of reasons. Also, when I walk in the neiborhoods at night, I don't feel unsafe....

I love it in R.O.

Look, with all of those lofts going in, you're not going to be able to take all the yuppies in Royal Oak. East Side, man. You have the Lake, Downtown, Belle Isle, Eastern Market, of course GPP has enough bars around where you can do pub crawls and there is no local bar in RO as cool as Taproom, including Gusoline. Too much traffic out that way, too. GPP is the best kept secret in Detroit, all the good restaurants and shops and that you'd find in RO, but the houses are a lot cooler. plus it's cetrally located-i can do a 25 minute commute to southfield every day, be in Hammtramck in 5 minutes, to CityClub in 10-and Jack Kerouac used to live and drink in my nieghborhood. Where's Royal Oaks Jack Kerouac, huh?

East Side!

damn...you can't get any square footage in Royal Oak if you want to be walking distance to downtown...unless you're shelling out a ton of cash...was kinda hoping for like 1200 sq ft...walking distance to downtown...anybody know of a place like that?

Sorry.

Royal Oak has been expensive for a while now. Ferndale is still semi-resonable.

I think I'm leaning towards Royal Oak. I have a lot of friends on the east side, but my two best friends work the opposite schedule as me at MGM Casino, and they're both talking about moving to Vegas. I have a good job here otherwise I'd join them. So I'm thinking Royal Oak it is. PaperHearts, Dyno, jump on the bandwagon with me.

i wanted to buy in royal oak but we didn't even bother to look right now- we knew it would be too expensive for what we wanted/needed. same with some other areas. we settled for harper woods - have been here for 2 years and will probably be here at least 3 more. as the girls get older i would like a bigger place and i would prefer my kids not to go to the high school here.

Royal Oak is a land-locked city and therefore less advantageous on a strategic, sort of fort building level. Plus again, Schools libraries are better in Grosse Pointe, so are the parks and salons and again, we've got Downtown, Belle Isle, Eastern Market, Hamtramck is like 5 minute's drive, etc, less traffic, etc.

Royal Oak is great, but maybe you should consider Clawson, which is right next to Royal Oak. I live there and am very happy with my surroundings. I'm about 5 minutes away from downtown Royal Oak and I-75. Plus, Thomas Video is in Clawson. They have a HUGE selection of foreign, cult, indie, and downright hard to find films.
