i want to start a monthly, im just not sure which direction i want to go.

any input would be very much appreciated :thanks:

Why focus on only the old? It basically is saying goth, post-punk and the like are dead genres?

Cinema Strange, Editors, Strip Mall Seizures, New Thrill Parade, Deep Eynde, Sixteens, etc. How about a GOTH night in general?

i would like to do an old skool event because i want to do a night reminiscent of the club nights i used to go to when i was young growing up in nyc.

they would play wax trax stuff, ministry, puppy, sisters, fla, xymox, leatherstrip, meat beat, siouxsie, bauhaus, nitzer ebb, etc. plus some 80's like soft cell "sex dwarf",stephan duffy "kiss me",etc.

I'd so totally be down. Where would you think of holding it?

i have a few venues in mind.

it's unfortunate that so many people dislike the labyrinth or i would do it there.

another issue is most people will not deviate from their programming that directs them to go to city club every saturday, so that leaves friday. the tough part is finding a venue that will be friendly towards a "goth" crowd, especially on a weekend night. i want to avoid a venue that has a lot of local customers. my expierence in the past is almost every time the locals will be rude/harass the people that come out.

there's a venue called the village idiot in detroit (eastside),it's literally across the street from grosse point.

i just had a drum & bass event there last saturday. it is a decent venue, 1 room has a small stage & dancefloor for 100 people (packed. the other room has the bar, tables, and typical bar games (darts, foozeball, pool) and the sound system in there is pretty good.

is the far eastside too far of a drive???

would people prefer it being in downtown detroit?

FT's Bar & Grille on south bound Gratiot in Roseville would be a cool place to host this, most if not all ppl that go there are cool.and Fridays thew place is usually dead,IMO I think it would be a perfect location.

It'd be perfect because it's right next to my house.

  • 4 weeks later...

if you think FT's had a small dance floor, i wouldnt try mephistos either.

i was being generous, FT's does not have a dancefloor at all.

mephisto's is small, but that is a good thing. i do not expect tons of people to come to an old skool night.

hell, 50 people would fucking rock. lol.

well I know I and a bunch of my friends would show, I would do anything to hear some older stuff be played at the bar.

    • ~~~~~ Actually, I found it got better.  I had to learn to enjoy life.   With "Middle Child Syndrome" you don't have the luxury of certain thoughts or behaviors as you watch everyone else around you living their life and "going through it".  However, there does come a point where what was then is no longer now and you find your voice, then you can start learning what it means to live life as we understand it.   Unfortunately, because that "freedom" comes later in life than most, you end up as an adult living a crash course of "This is Life" without training wheels and it is a scary position to be in while you are still carrying the scars of an inescapable sense of duty and responsibility that defines you as you navigate your new now.  You come across as a somewhat very naïve, yet responsible adult and there isn't a lack of participants waiting in line to take advantage of that beacon.    However, without the emotionally charged state of youth misdirecting you, you are also able to come to lifechanging decisions for your betterment quicker than most, as you are hyper aware of what is coming your way.   Mix that with a bit of new found confidence and you find that you have a voice that can help others to assess their own situations and life choices.   ~~~~~ As for myself, I interact with a lot of young people who are currently "going through it" and I let them know that although they are feeling it, they have to step back and reassess their situation from a different perspective.   Inevitably, however, with age comes the "I'm too old for this..." mindset wakeup moment and then you can truly begin to enjoy what life has to offer.  I just try to help people get to that point a bit more sooner than later.

    • Not that this gets a lot of activity, but it's been three years, which is also around the last time @Lucyfurlogged on here.  This can probably be unpinned :P
