DJ Nocker
Me and my friends have recently discovered that we are bored out of our skulls. We go to clubs on some of the club nights but cant seem to think of much else to do. Just wondering, what does everyone else do with there friends to pass the time or have fun? We are all 20, so 21+ stuff has to be exluded for this one. HELP ME OUT HERE
Scary Guy
Well I've heard of other Gothic communities that actually do activities (like we used to). There was one that had a softball team even. Could always go bowling or do some other activity like that. Camping was always fun. Could do a theater outing (movie or play). We have a few nice museums including the DIA and science museums. Could pitch in to one of the many campaigns to beautify Detroit. Maybe save up and travel somewhere for a weekend. Throw a house party. Build something. Go race on Gratiot/Woodward. In any case just don't sit and atrophy till your 26 like I have.
know_buddy_kares
Just making an observers comment here, how could we ever manage organization like that when 90% of the posters on this thread can't even make it to City club? I mean hell, i see more of the old crew that doesn't post here anymore than I do with anyone still posting.
sass_in_the_pants
Here's just some stuff off the top of my head: Go to www.metroparks.com/ - admission to a metropark is $4 per car. There's a drop-down menu that tells you what activities you can do at each park. Get your asses OUTSIDE! Summers here are painfully brief, so I say enjoy EVERY SECOND outside that you can. There is horse back riding, picnicing, hiking, bike riding, canoeing, and in the winter there is cross country skiing and ice skating. Sometimes, you just need to go outside and play, you know what I mean? Oh yeah, and Willow Park has a skate park. Go see a Tigers game! Woot! Woot! There's always movies, but there's movies, and then there's Movies...forget AMC bullshit, and go to http://redfordtheatre.com/movie/ and see a classic (Back to the Future is coming in June - $4 and REAL butter on your popcorn) or, if you like movies that make you feel horrible about yourself and life in general, you can see a foreign film at the DIA. Films play all weekend, but if a movie isn't your gig, they have a special program every Friday night. http://www.dia.org/calendar/friday_nights/ Speaking of art, usually the first Friday of the month is when art galleries have their new artist opening. Call to find out when their next artist opening is - they have free beer and munchies, and of course, you can chat it up with the hipsters and look at some cool shit. The zoo is always fun, and if you're tired of our zoo, drive your asses down to Toledo to see some of their zoo. Speaking of weekend trips...you can take the Amtrak train from Dearborn to Chicago for $57 round trip. I usually stay with friends when I go down there, but you can always split a hotel room. The Detroit Riverwalk is supposed to be 2/3 completed by June, so you should go check that out. And int eh winter, there's skating at Campus Martius and we always make it up to Windsor at least once a year to go curling! (though there's curling clubs in Michigan, but you can't dirnk beer there, so we drive to Canada). Go see car races, and some very interesting mullets at Flat Rock international speedway. We always make it down for the bus races, like the Blue Bird buses that you used to ride to school, yeah, they race me, and it is STUPID how much fun that is. Detroit Roller Derby!!! Once a month they are at the Masonic. Go see them! It's wicked fun! Rollerskating. They have adult nights, usually Sunday night, at all the rinks. Seriously, it's WAY more fun than you might be expecting. There's also this website: http://www.greatstufftodo.com/ and this one: http://www.visitdetroit.com/thingstodo/ There's also non-organized stuff to do. Have a dinner party. They're fun! Play some cards or board games. Or, if you're like my friends, you play games like Look Out, and Sharp Stick..for legal reasons I am not allowed to explain either of those games, but let me tell you, if we can make a night of fun out of two broken podiums and a Murphy bed, then really there is fun to be had anywhere. And I didn't even START on the 21+ stuff you can do... I'm the 'cruise director' of our group of friends, which is why I know all of this stuff. And tell your friends (because in every group there's that one person who's like 'I don't WANNA do this. It's different. It's going to suck.') that you can't guarantee they'll love it, or that they'll even like it, but it WILL be something different. Coming from someone who hasn't said she was bored since she was 11, trust me, there is TONS to do. YOu just have to look hard enough and be open to things that you think you won't like. BrassFusion
all good suggestions... and the thing is, if we organize something really special on this board (like tina and medea and co. did for the welcome back brenda barbecue and karaoke nights), there will probably be a bigger turnout. it would be so freakin cool to just get everybody together and road trip down to cedar point.... but someone would have to pick a day first, lol. or we could have a picnic. or a beach party. i'm sure a lot of people would be able to make it and would really like to go, and even if you got no DGN participation, you'd still have your friends with you. I mean hell, i see more of the old crew that doesn't post here anymore than I do with anyone still posting. Because I hate the place with a burning hatred that is fueled by pure hate. That's my excuse anyhow. Most other people have other things to do like... well most of the stuff listed in this thread. DGN night is stupid anyhow. Higgins has never given anything to Troy for having it there and he never will. At least John from Mephisto's offered to let him in free and give him some perks along with some of the regulars from DGN. IMO Higgins has never done anything for the scene except take its money. Sounds like this would make a good poll though.
Troy Spiral (13)
If i get bored hanging out with my friends... i upgrade my friends. Should be interesting enough that i can sit in a room and have a good time talking. If not ... CURB!! But seriously the above have covered what i would have suggested. Good luck. Mephisto's is just simply out of the question for me though however, it's too far of a drive, and I just simply don't like the business politics that go on in that place. But as for Higgins being a Greedy slum lord.. so what. I know how run down the joint is, i know the prices, and compared to other parking lot costs, entrance fees, the place aint half bad to get in and have your car somewhat secure. I also know when going there, that there's going to be people i know there, and not just know, that i can trust to be around. I mean though soon enough, I won't even technically be able to debate what clubs around here are better, If things go my way, I'll be in Germany within a year from now. Scary Guy
whoa, mephisto's offered dgn perks? why the HELL are we not going there instead? That's my point! Also as far as the "business practices" of Mephisto's go. How can you even say that the ones of the Leland house are any better? I'll admit that John has made some bad decisions, but at least he's honorable. Higgins has done some shady shit.
Troy Spiral (13)
whoa, mephisto's offered dgn perks? why the HELL are we not going there instead? No real dancing there and its a long ass haul west siders and a major pain in the ass for newbies to find. (always need to keep the newbies in mind) Along with a whole list of other reasons, that if i need to i'll just try and find , and cut & paste rather than go over THIS one again, and again... and again... I like the place myself, just its a bad choice in terms of centrality of location, ease of finding it isn't a place that will help us find new folk as much as other places will due to its lack of visibility/turnout... Also longtime DGNers automatically know were to go now, even without internet access, a venue change would be fairly pointless. Omg i've started to go over this one again and im not even using proper sentences...

Scales
Just wondering, what does everyone else do with there friends to pass the time or have fun? I spend most of my time with my friends talking, gaming, rocking out, and joking around. There isn't any secret formula to not being bored.. then again, I usually end up skipping boredom and going for nausea and severe depression. Let loose a little, when life gives you a bad hand of cards, light the table on fire; good friends are like extended family. ..thus concludes half-asleep rambling.. Fierce Critter
CC is a legacy club that's formed a GENUINE atmosphere through somewhere's around 20 years of regular, loyal attendance. Mephisto's is a general nightspot that once a week or so puts on "gothy airs" in a lame attempt at drawing in bu$ine$$ with oh-so-obvious "this is what the gothy kids like, so let's give it to them once a week - but not entirely, because we have to bring in other business on the other floors" falsitude. "But CC is filthy, the drinks are expensive, Higgins doesn't love me enough to change my diaper when I whine, theh sound system sucks, the DJ's play crap and there isn't any toilet paper in the bathroom. And Mephisto's is.. clean!!!!" WTFE. CC must be doing something right to bring in the attendance it does despite all the supposed horrors & injustices people whine about on a regular basis. Troy - thanks for not buckling to the pressure of those who would choose tidy toilets and perks to a place that walks the walk and talks the talk full-time, catering to NO-ONE. odims_sphere
I like bowling, I'm bad at it but I love it. I'll pretty much bowl with anyone who wants to. I'm a bowling whore.
Fierce Critter
I was just about raised in a bowling alley. Dad bowled, so I was at alleys regularly. I can't bowl myself - tendonitis. But damn if I don't get a hardon from the sound of a 12-lb thundering into those sissy pins. Yowl.

If I don't get them all on the first ball you can almost bet I'll miss again. Especially the 10 pin. If I get tapped with that damn 10 pin, and me being right handed... fuggetabboutit. Fierce Critter
We have to get together for a bowling party. That would be awesome. I wanna see Candy bowling in her tight dresses & falls. And all of us in bowling shoes. Don't they do some kind of night bowl at Thunderbowl in Allen Park? Remember Bowling for Dollars? Filmed there. Fucking porno for someone like me. I have such potential for massive nerdentity.
Scary Guy
to a place that walks the walk and talks the talk full-time, catering to NO-ONE. Exactly my point, couldn't have said it better myself. It doesn't even cater to its own crowd or give a shit about anyone there in any way. We're just walking dollar signs to them. I've stated my three reasons why CC is such a success (just to recap: history, hours, dance floor size) and if another club opened and offered all that and more CC would lose all its business within a few months (well except for the history part anyhow).
