Network Starcraft

Recommended Posts

This past weekend I wanted to share one of life's greatest experiences with my girlfriend: network Starcraft. I bought her the battle chest so she'd have the full version and not just a spawn of mine. She played through the first few episodes of the campaign to learn how to play while I was taking on a few Zerg opponents on a custom map to brush up on my 5ki11z. Then the time came to network and play together and for the life of me I could not get it to work. In the old days of LAN parties I remember lugging over my desktop, plugging into the hub, and all was good to go. But now she and I both have laptops and I have no idea what I'm doing. We each have wifi and are connected to the internet though her service (though I don't think she has a router, just a secured wifi thingy from her phone company). We each have ethernet ports and I tried direct connecting us with a cable and that didn't work. We even tried both logging into BattleNet and we could see each other in the room and chat with each other, but when one of us made a game, the other couldn't find it 'cuz it said user was too latent or something like that. Eventually, with tears in my eyes, I gave up.

So how do we set this up so we can network Starcraft next weekend?

Your Battlenet issue is most likely related to this based on what info you have given:

Unless you have arranged for your internet service provider to provide you with a second IP address, chances are your computers are sharing an internet connection, and thus an internet IP address. Neither Diablo, Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition, nor StarCraft support multiple computers with the same internet IP address connecting to the same game on Battle.net. Battle.net is unable to split the game data between the two computers effectively in these cases. You may be able to contact your internet service provider to get an additional IP address to solve this problem.

As to your local network game your issue might be the Windows firewall (or a firewall in general) as I have had this issue with Diablo2 many times. Just add the following to the exceptions tab in the firewall and should be ok:

Name : Type 'StarCraft Battle.net TCP'

Port : Enter the number '6112' and check 'TCP'

Create a second entry with the below settings:

Name : Type 'StarCraft Battle.net UDP'

Port : Enter the number '6112' and check 'UDP'

I have also found that sometimes (and this is completly random and sometimes is in reverse) when I create a local game and the GF couldn't connect to my game, if she created one we could play without any issues. Sometimes it was just the opposite with me creating the game to play in.

Dont get too depressed if the GF isnt into it for more than a night or two. (Been there so many times often i don't even bother) What is especially depressing is when they give lip service "oh i like XYZ !!" but you can tell they really dont, but dont want to admit it. =.( Basicly if you want a GF that is into the same interests as you, we need to become gay and turn the G into a B. Sick joke by god on us all.

If your just playing with the GF... kinda needless to connect to battlenet though right? Just make a local lan game.

The GF plays Civ IV all the time which is why I thought it'd be fun to play something together. So far she seems to like Starcraft. The thing is Troy, I tried to set up a local LAN game but couldn't figure out how for the life of me which is why we tried Battlenet and even that didn't work. I'll try Dubh's suggestions this weekend ... if I can figure out what the hell he said. lol
