Motor city goths

Recommended Posts

So, I'm checking out all things michigan and goth and

I have a few questions.......

I'm on the Leland City Club site and it links to some group named the

"Motor City Goths"

They must be very impressive since it links to a blank web site.

And why wouldnt CC link to DGN? . I know 500+ active members can't compare with a blank web site but.... :nut:nut

So are they a real group?

Why isnt there a link to DGN

and

BONUS QUESTION?

Are Mephisto's (Wed) , Necto (Mon), Luna, and CC the only clubs in Michigan????

(I remember hearing about some place called Odyssey?? in Lansing

some place called the flats in Kalamazoo

and some place in GR ?????)

All I can find are the Det./A2 places above.

I'm relatively new to the area so forgive me if this has been covered before.

Well, this site isn't officially affiliated with CC. Really, it just happens that most goths in the Detroit area stop by there at some point.

The two sites have very different atmospheres too. DGN is ultra supportive and avoids confrontation, whereas the CC site is more about flaming and saying whatever you want to whomever you want.

Well, when the site is up, it's kind of a 'portal' to goth-y stuff (concerts, places, playlists, stores) in SE Michigan. (Unless it's changed since I last looked at it.)

Uh, meh. Troy will have to answer that one. In the end, it's no big deal as most people find their way to one site, the other, or both.

So are they a real group?

They're just providing information. They did have some banner ads, but considering the size of the goth scene in general, I'd find it hard to believe they're highly profitable if at all. In other words, they're in it more for the scene than the money.

Do you just mean clubs with a goth-ish night? 'Cause there are many clubs in MI. AFAIK, these are the only places with any sort of regular goth-related activities. Most other events are one-off sort of things.

Motorcitygoths.com is down at the moment due to technical issues. Once we get it back up I, Buddhax, and Pulse State will run it pretty much. When it was up it was awesome, kinda like a DIAG on the web.

www.archive.org might be helpful if you want to see what it looked like.

Thanks Scary Guy, cool!

I edited the original post to highlight my other question?

Odyssey night-Lansing

The Flats-Kalamazoo

Ten Bells?????----Grand Rapids

This is what I was told.

Lansing has a club (the only 2 clubs are X-cel and Spiral that I know of)

that has "Odyssey night" kinda like Mondays at Necto

Grand Rapids supposedly has the same thing at a place called Ten Bells Nite or something.

And Kalamazoo has something like that at The Flats (???)

but I couldnt find the info on the web.

If Mid/West MI sucks, Im perfectly comfortable with that. I just wanted to know if theres a regular goth/alt night at any clubs west of A2???

<or Maybe I imagined this :nut:nut >

Hi,

As far as I know, the Lansing Industrial-Goth type night isn't happening anymore. There is an occasional goth music night at a cafe in the Mt. Pleasant [CMU] area, but it isn't a dance club.

As for the rest of non -SE MI, I have no idea. Maybe someone else on here does.

Odyssey used to float between a few clubs in Lansing but it died out a few years ago...

Mt. Pleasant used to have a "New Music Night" on tuesdays... "Freak Night " to the regulars until they decided to give all goth a try.. it flopped and after 12 years of tweaking the mood, the owners killed the night in favor of something that made money.

There was a kinda goth night at one of the local coffee clubs,, last I heard that had died off too.. but I moved out of the area about 4 years ago and only go down to visit with friends now.

Grand Rapids has a kinda goth night... at um... I can't remember the name of the club or what night it is....

I was one of the administrators on MCG, so yes, that's what we intended it to be. Unfortunately, it's down right now, and I have no idea when it's coming back. :(

True. We made no money off of it. All we cared is that people knew what was going on. "Supporting the scene," if you will. :)

The odyssey night in Lansing has been dead or a while. Club X-cel which used to host it every Friday night wasn’t getting he crowd they wanted so it went to a every third Friday and now as far as I know; its gone. Spiral the other Lansing area alternative club is almost exclusively "gay" nights except for Wednesdays which are cabaret. Spiral is a great time and you get a very west coast feel in my opinion from the club. The club has a great vibe and atmosphere just not to my taste for the music and not the easiest to meet straight people.

Ten Bells in GR hosts a night on Tuesdays that I went to once when if first started that was alright but nothing great. They have a troupe their called the devil dolls that perform stage shows kind of like CASP but not as good. From time to time they have decent bands that play and even a good BSDM show but the overall feeling of the club to me is lack luster.

The first three you mentioned are the only really clubs that have definitive "Goth" nights. They are always a great time and give you a nice picture of the scene in the state. Unfortunately if you’re marooned in mid or west Michigan like me you get to do a lot of driving.

Hope this helps

Ages ago, like before dirt was invented, we had some very bad experiences with trying to make friends with the "stablished" "cool kids" at various key points of the detroit goth scene and the then existing websites/email groups. But rather than hold a grudge i just went my own seprate ways and made this "easygoing" place. Many of the early DGN mods (then called The Spiral Board) had similar negative experiences trying to play nice with certain people close to the "established goth scene". We sort of DGN from scratch, as an independant thing, were there were no "cool kids" to impress and everyone was welcomed from day one.

Flash forward 5+ years on... That legacy has lead to us not being listed on some of the various sites you see around, despite us being an active, decentralized board for "the whole SE michigan scene". Good thing google couldnt care less which cliques we are in with and ranks us high regardless.

Over the years that rift has slowly been going away, but DGN is still pretty much "on the outside" of the various CC and other , lets say "in crowd" scene personalties.

Basicly most of us are old, dont shmooze with the right people, and are generally "uncool" in the traditional sense. Oh how goth. =P

Despite DGN in general (and me specificlly via various other projects i've pushed CC via) sending CC endless business over the years both directly and indirectly.

The DGN "play nice" rules have alienated more than a few of the "cool kids" over time. They show up, post a few flames, and then as soon as they realize we dont play that here (or at least try to keep it to a minimum) they never come back.

We grow via word of mouth and online direct person-to-person promotion from people that like what we stand for. The more help we can get the better. =)

Nowadays a lot of the above is gone with the wind and not even remembered. Which is a good thing. If you see a goth site that has a links section and doesnt have us listed, email them and tell them to add us. If they dont , oh well. At least we tried. =)

Damn, Troy, all the reasons why you said DGN is not part of the scene is why I like it.

You're one of the coolest guys ever in my book (tho' I dont know what that says about me)

I almost pulled my teeth out when I had to cancel coming to CC this past weekend

Next time in, I'd buy you a drink, man, but Ive been told you'll already be sloshed by the time I get there.

And thanks to Lord Shaper for the info.

I called Ten Bells and they still have Tuesday night "Clash" in GR w/the devil dolls, for what its worth.

Lansing has a whole lot of NOTHING.

Except Pomba Gira, which is actually a whole lot better than nothing.

Anyway, she told me about you nuts, which, of course may be worse (than nothing)

but thanks nonetheless.

=) =)

Troy I don't see what that fairytale has to do with this post. MCG has never picked favorites as far as I know. Both forums have had equal promotion on that site. There are others however that do suck. E-mailing them might be a good idea because if you don't shut up people eventually either give in or kill you. Usually they give in just cause it's easier.

MCG? Fairy tale? Hell bro until just the last (4-5?) months or so i didnt even know about your guy's site. I wasnt saying anything bad about it. That story has to do with stuff that happend ages ago for the most part. Pre-spiral board even. Most of what i was referencing happened before i even knew 98% of the people on this board.

But some of the same ideas apply now, as then. I wasnt making any specific statement about any website/group, i intentionally didnt.

My comment had nothing to do with "motor city goths" it was just a general statement about why many places that are about "the SE michigan scene" dont (or at least didnt last time i checked, granted its been a few years now) have us listed or know about us. Meaning, DGN is mostly random intersted people , not, promoted from the top-down in terms of the local goth establishment(s) but from the bottom up.

When is the last time you saw me make a publicly negative comment about another "scene" board/website on DGN? Hell we delete or discourage most of the anti-XYZ board posts that crop up if they seem particularly rude, suprizingly regularly out of respect for other "web venues".

Just because X place might make negative comments about us publicly , doesnt mean we do it back in return at least not on the board. (again not anything about "MGC") Im just speaking in general about a lot of things.

All i know about MGC is that its a website with gothish info, and you and pulse are and/or where, involved with it. I dont have any negative comentary about it.

Well I wasn't really involved with it back then, I just yelled at them to fix things that needed fixin. If it ever comes back I'll be an admin. MCG was a great source of info for all things alternative and I really do want to bring it back.

I know you weren't putting down MCG but I was just wondering how it related to the topic at hand. No biggie.

Well, I of course, WAS putting down MCG in the very first post as all needless prejudice must stem from those that have no contact or real first hand knowledge.

Now of course Im dying to see what you mere mortals call the MCG site.

But I reserve the right to put down X-cel Night Club in lansing for cancelling Odyssey Night before I even moved to the area.

F*** you X-Cel!

and F*** you mid-MI for having no good club scene.

There you go Troy. I gave you a new thing to edit f you'd like.

Bishop and I always say that when we make our first million we are going to open the much needed club!! AND our goth nights will NOT be on a weekday! That pisses me off!

The eternal, we went to X-Cell. We were NOT impressed. The DJ played great music, but they were all remixes. I didn't like that. Also, the guy closed down at 1!

Troy, we are not "the cool kids" basically because none of us really give a shit about being cool anymore! :cool

Sadly I let one of those "cool kids" tear down my self esteem with about 2 seconds worth of up and down looks. I've been very fagile as of late.
