Video game dilusions

Recommended Posts

Ever know anyone who thought the video game was somewhat real...that it contained secret messages...was part of an illuminati plot....or that it was teaching them to be a real soldier for the 'end times' (which is coming soon I guess....)?

I have. It seems to be more and more common.

Computer game delusions

Academic Department of Psychiatry, University of Sheffield, Longley Centre, Sheffield S5 7JT, UK Dr Forsyth and colleagues describe a patient with delusionalinvolvement in a computer game scenario (April 2001 JRSM, pp.184-185). Such cases may be understood within a broader context—thecontent of psychotic phenomenology incorporating elements ofthe patient's psychosocial environment, while the form of apsychotic symptom (e.g. ‘delusion’) represents anunderlying biological ‘signal’1,2. In 1993 we reporteda patient with paranoid schizophrenia whose auditory hallucinationsderived from a computer game. These hallucinations underwent delusionalinterpretation, the patient believing that they ‘meant’ shewas homeless3. In that report we predicted that ‘similarcases will arise as video games become more widely accessible’3.
