Music Played Behind The Bar At City Club

Recommended Posts

I'm all for the 80's. It's when I grew up, I love the music. However there are just some 80's songs that just don't belong at City Club. I had a conversation with Mike Higgins this evening about the music that he's demanding being played behind the bar. He states that he's trying to be "retro" and trying to "educate" the younger goers. However most of the music that is being played is putting the younger goers off. I tried to sway him to let the bartenders play what they want to play, to keep it lively around the bar, but he wasn't hearing it. So maybe the next time you're at the club and you notice (and you feel the same way I do, you probably don't, but if you) talk to him and see if we can get some decent music played behind the bar

What was wrong with the bar music last night? It was way more decent than the DJ set that's for sure. I passed the bar and heard Peter Murphy and Soiuxsie. I miss dancing to those songs. Out on the dance floor I just felt like I was in a bad sci-fi movie.

I guess that's what I get for not being there for a while...

I didn't say that the music behind the bar sucked. There are a couple of songs on that DVD that actually FIT into the scene there at City.

It was more fun to hang out by the bar when the bartenders were able to play the type of music that they wanted to play. People having fun by the bar = selling more drinks.

The bartenders aren't happy that they have to keep playing the same music DVD over and over. Most of the young newer people I've spoken to are confused by the music played behind the bar and then getting to the dance floor and it's a totally different type of music.

And a bad sci-fi movie? I actually thought the set was pretty good for a Friday night.

*edited because I had very poor grammar*

I find this, lets say amusing, considering that I played Siouxsie in my less decent then the bar music DJ set.

I, for one, am glad that they don't play the same kind of music behind the bar as they do on the floor. I agree the employees should have some say over what's played, but when I'm hanging by the bar sometimes it's because the music on the floor is bugging me, and I want something not quite so jarring.

Which I totally agree with.

Bishop can't even bring in his Xbox 360 on Friday nights anymore. I loved playing Xbox with him, and plus it made me buy more alcohol as I was ALWAYS at the bar....

See that's the thing though, it's NOT what the employees want to listen to. They are told by the owner that they have to listen to it.

The employees play stuff like Tupac. Now don't get me wrong, I <3 Shakur more than most goth people, but the point is that most goth people don't want to hear that stuff. If Higgins is playing stuff like Siouxie and not Tupac, I could see why he wouldn't want the employees to play their rap.

I will say though, I had mad props for the bartenders when they played the entire Dethklok CD. That's pretty much the only good thing I've heard come from behind the bar, for the most part. Other than the stuff they played that also gets played on the dance floor, I've heard industrial from behind the bar but it was a looooong time ago and only a few times.

However I will say that if Higgins is so clueless he's playing 80's music like Ah-ha - Take on Me, I could understand why people would be like "WTF...?!?"

Maybe he just needs a crash course in what to play....? I haven't heard his selection of music, I haven't been there in a month. I'll take note of it the next time I'm there.

I wouldn't put the bartenders into a box by implying they only want to play Tupac. Yes the bartenders will play Tupac or other rap/hip hop, however more often than not they're either listening to WRIF or White Zombie or some other music besides rap. Hell, when they were allowed to bring in their own CD's, all you had to do was ask Bishop what he had in his case and then ask if he'd play something that you saw in there that was interesting.

Standing at the bar and hearing Sinead O'Connor's Mandinka or some other off the wall 80's song just throws me for a loop. There ARE some great songs that fit in to the scene there on the DVD. But they're mixed in with stuff that makes you cock your head like a dog.

Like I said, there may not be others that feel the same way I do, however I'm getting tired of hearing the same shit coming from behind the bar every time I go down there. Yes it's nice to have something different playing at the bar than what is being played on the floor, but when you're hearing the young club goers say "who the hell is that?! This sucks!!" when they're standing by the bar, and you pass that information on to the owner and get the response that I did, that's just discouraging.

80's is actually a good choice. why have "goth" in both rooms.

unless you have one room playing new skool & the other old skool.

80's is better than them playing hip hop.

You don't have "goth" on the floor. Most of the time you have oontz oontz oontz on the floor. Don't get me wrong, I love me some City Club dj's.

And everyone is talking like all the bartenders played was hip hop. Most of the time they threw the hip hop on after 2 and it wasn't every freaking Friday & Saturday.

Aww come on, you & Meta and the rest of the dj's there know that you can't mix and can't pick music that people like...

kidding....

Sorry, but being a Friday DJ I am getting pretty sick of hearing how much I suck on an almost daily basis! This past Friday for instance I played a mix of brand new music (for the people that bitch about not hearing anything new), the typical music/requests, old school stuff (for the people that bitch that they don't here this and that anymore), and some of the stuff that people bitch never gets played but should at City Club. Overall I would say that I played something for everyone at one point or another. Basically what it comes down to is I (and the other DJs) work our asses of for you people and all we hear is how shitty we are. It makes you wonder why we bother at all, just get a fucking juke box already! Again, sorry but this shit is getting old and I haven't even been there that long.

Unfortunately that's the way that people are going to react, no matter what you play. You can't make 100% of the people happy 100% of the time. I, for one, was very happy with the music on Friday. You played some stuff that I hadn't heard in awhile or had never heard at all there.

So please, don't lump everyone in that "you people" category. City Club dj's do have fans, but unfortunately they're always going to have the hecklers also.

Back to the behind the bar music... Turn it down. One of the things I liked about CC was that the bar area was quiet enough to allow for conversations.

I agree. The bar area has been the best place to have a conversation, unless you want to go into the bathroom. LOL

in the market of djing that you are in the dj is a juke box, a living breathing juke box, but a juke box none the less. the goth scene/crowd doesnt care about mixing, they care about hearing their requests and how long they have to wait to hear them. it's the same in every city. people will complain the dj's play the same stuff every week, yet every week they make the same requests.

you are NEVER going to make everyone happy, hell if you can make a few people happy then you did a good job.

plus you are djing at a club where dj's come & go all the time. does city club have any monitors in the dj booth?

lord knows they dont care enough about the main sytem. then again most clubs that cater to "goth" can careless about the concept of djing.

here's some good advice:

dont take it personal, just have fun with it. play the requests throw in a few tracks YOU like and roll with it.

I've noticed that the more people complain the less I care for it there, because management hears the complaints and change things, making everything worse for people who thought it was just fine. sometimes I think that change is necessary, and if someone doesn't like it, they made the choice to go there, they can make the choice to either deal with it or go elsewhere. Complaining will only make it all worse for all of us who are okay with change and still like the place for the people in it.

Yep! Thats what I was gonna say to him too!!

Hugs for you DJ Moondancer!!

I don't think me going up to Mike and saying "Mike, I love the music, but the younger crowd doesn't know who in the hell it is" is very much of a complaint. I'm not going to stand idly by and watch city club be turned into some hipster hangout.
