Currently, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice [uCMJ,] 14 offenses [Articles] are punishable by death. Under the following Articles of the UCMJ, the death penalty can be imposed at any time:

* 94 - Mutiny or sedition

* 99 - Misbehavior before the enemy

* 100 - Subordinate compelling surrender

* 101 - Improper use of countersign

* 102 - Forcing a safeguard

* 104 - Aiding the enemy

* 106a - Espionage

* 110 - Improper hazarding of vessel

* 118 - Murder

* 120 - Rape and carnal knowledge

Four provisions of the UCMJ carry a death sentence only if the crime is committed during times of war:

* 85 - Desertion

* 90 - Assaulting or willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer

* 106 - Spies

* 113 - Misbehavior of a sentinel or lookout

Article 118 on multiple counts is a definite, I can see them adding Article 94 (Sedition.) They will probably add Article 133 (Conduct Unbecoming an Officer.) Also, add Article 92 (Disobeying a Direct Order/Regulation,) in that it is against Regs to carry a personal firearm onto base unless at the firing range or to have it secured. (When I was in, if you lived on base and had a firearm, it had to be secured in Security Forces arsenal lockers, but available to you 24/7. And yes, if you live on base, your living areas are subject to inspection at any time.) I can definitely see them layering several more UCMJ codes on top of him to make sure he is away for life.

And Gaf is right that historically, most executions were conducted by hanging in the military, last one being John A. Bennett in 1961. There are a few that have been shot. Though reading the article, it appears that since 1961, the went from hanging to the electric chair, and currently using lethal injection, updating the method as the technology progressed.
