2nd marijuana tests show positive for 2 Russian sumo wrestlers

Saturday 06th September, 11:56 AM JST

TOKYO —

Detailed examinations of urine samples from two Russian wrestlers involved in alleged marijuana use show positive results, Japan Sumo Association sources said Saturday.

Russian siblings Roho and Hakurozan tested positive for marijuana in random tests conducted by the association on 69 wrestlers earlier this month, about two weeks after the arrest of Wakanoho, a grappler also from Russia, on suspicion of marijuana possession.

Despite the results of the latest examinations by Mitsubishi Chemical Medience Corp, Japan’s only institution certified by the World Anti-Doping Agency for conducting antidoping tests, JSA Chairman Kitanoumi said further tests should be conducted since Roho and Hakurozan have categorically denied the charges.

The urine samples ‘‘may contain elements of various sedatives, so I want the samples to be tested again elsewhere,’’ Kitanoumi told reporters.

Kitanoumi, a former yokozuna, or grand champion, heads the Kitanoumi stable to which Hakurozan belongs.

Roho, 28, whose real name is Boradzov Soslan Feliksovich, is a No. 3 maegashira in the top-tier makuuchi division. His 26-year-old brother Hakurozan, or Baradzov Batraz Feliksovich, is a wrestler in the second-tier juryo division.

Meanwhile, Wakanoho, the Russian who was arrested for possessing marijuana and became the first active wrestler in sumo’s long history to be fired, told police Friday that he smoked the drug on several occasions when he would return to his country after first arriving in Japan in 2005.

However Wakanoho, whose real name is Gagloev Soslan, said he has never smoked dope with Russian brothers Roho and Hakurozan.

Appearing slightly dumbfounded after hearing the news of Roho, a top-tier division wrestler and his younger brother Hakurozan, who belongs to the second-tier juryo division, Gagloev said, ‘‘I have never smoked marijuana with those two.’’

The 20-year-old Gagloev said before he arrived in Japan he had been mixing marijuana with tobacco leaves in Russia since the time he was around 14 or 15 years old.

In Japan, Gagloev told police that he smoked in the toilet of a disco in Tokyo’s entertainment district of Roppongi around June 20.

The suspect said he was approached by another Russian and a black man, whom he purchased two bags of marijuana and a cannabis pipe from for 20,000 yen.

Gagloev said he received one cigarette containing marijuana from the Russian and two Russian-made cigarettes.

He smoked the joint the next day and removed tobacco from one of the Russian cigarettes and replaced it with marijuana before placing it into his wallet.

Gagloev said he rolled joints with the remainder of the marijuana and used a water pipe, smoking in a private room in the Magaki stable and at his apartment three or four times each.

Police said they detected marijuana in cigarette ashes they found after conducting a search of Gagloev’s apartment.

A DNA specimen was taken from Roho since he said he has been to Gagloev’s apartment, police said.

Gagloev was arrested after his wallet, which contained the cigarette as well as his alien registration card, was found and turned in to police after he lost it on the street.
