Anime Haters

What he said. My interest in Japanese culture predates my discovery of anime by about 2 decades, not that this really means anything in the grand scheme of things.

Why are you so concerned with what other people like? Why would you even waste energy obsessing about a whole genre of entertainment that you don't care for? And that whole "gothier than thou" outlook is not going to win much sympathy here. A major reason I love DGN is that almost everyone here is more concerned with being the fascinating individuals they are, than meeting some arbitrary standard of "true goth-hood". The diversity of opinions, interests, and personal styles here enriches me as a person, even if I don't agree with or care for some of them. After all, you learn NOTHING by associating only with people who share your likes & dislikes right down the line.

and yeah, that "retarted" bit was pretty damn funny.

Well said, Pomba Gira.

Anime and manga vary greatly. Japanese culture is also very rich and varied.

Personally, I don't care for most popular anime, but I have a weakness for "Death Note."

I don't hate anime... I just don't like it. I have seen my share of it... I had a roomate with over 2000 anime movies and he watched them constantly. I found it all rather... it was all the same. The large round eyes on Japanese people always confused me. Why do all teh women wear way to short mini skiets and carry watermelons in thier skin tight shirts?

I don't like ATHF either, but I would never say it was shit.

Everyone has different taste... and if you don't like my taste, dont lick me.

lol.... and after I warned everyone that it was going to get nasty. People got offended, and thus got offensive. Good thing I joined for entertainment when I'm bored rather than to make friends :p

I won't try to console any of the people that got really defensive and nasty towards me.... but for respect of japan, I would like to say that I said SPECIFICALLY I like the finer points of japanese culture, just not cutesy stuff, and especially anime. Japan, and Germany are perhaps the two most morbid minded fucked up countries of them all, and many of my favorite directors come from either or.

Some of you people got pretty defensive. I'm sorry to a certain extent.....I didn't know anime was that important to you. Damn furries.

It's not so much that I hate anime, it's just that it bores me to tears. It's pretty, but it makes no fucking sense, and since I'm not into mind altering drugs I find it very trying to attempt to sit through two hours of nonsense.

Most of the anime porn I've seen was fucked up and disturbing. Not in a profound way, but in a cheap-attempt-at-shock-value way. Not something I need to waste my time on.

As for Japanese culture, (Shade's going to kick my ass for saying this but) meh. I have nothing specifically against it, but I don't find it particularly interesting, and the cutesy elements previously mentioned tend to annoy me.

I am an observer of Japanese culture. Even had the opportunity to travel there. But its not because I find the Japanese culture to be an ideal or anything of that nature. It is a very damaged and flawed society IMO. But you touched on it in your comment above. It is in such damaged cultures that you will find some of the most interesting expressions of art and media.

In Japan's case they are so high stressed socially that all sorts of amazing things (both good and bad) come out at the ends. It is a culture of extremes due to the stress within it. And sometimes the pressure creates diamonds. Often very rough diamonds. But things of beauty none the less.

And yes. Anime is very important to many people. Its not required that everyone get it. But for those that do there is a depth they find that is utterly lacking in anything from the west. But then of course we could just be missing the depth that may be present in western entertainment... but we just don't see the appeal.

See thats the thing. It takes exposure to become vested enough in any art form to begin to see the nuances and the features that they stress. If you dropped someone in on a Shakespeare play without exposure to the medium they would be bored out of their mind. But to those who are familiar with it the nuance and art inherent to his work is indescribable.

If Anime is not your thing you will survive. As will the Anime fans. I can understand where you may feel threatened by it due to your identification with the Goth scene. Particularly if you feel like more and more Goths are being pulled in by Anime. You probably feel as though the identity of something you cherish is being changed beyond your control. You cannot freeze social change in time no matter how much you want to. You can just take the things you value and continue to hold them dear. And the best thing to do regarding what others value is encourage them to keep dear the things they cherish as well. Ripping on things people cherish will always put them on the defensive and often blind them to the things you may have to share.

Um ... what do anime and furries have to do with each other? Sure, there's some crossover but it's apples and oranges. It would be like saying, "I didn't know vampires were that important to you. Damn bondage freaks." Wait ... huh, what?

The more you talk, the more you show your ignorance.

Well, according to her profile, she is only 18. So, she has much to learn.

You apparently missed that whole conversation about age/wisdom/learning. It it, we learned that being older, having far more life experiences and actually having lived in the real world for some time does not mean you know anything more than an 18 year old that still lives with their parents and has never traveled beyond a trip to Walmart.

And I have so much that I could teach her.

Um ... because I, uh, have a book you know. Yeah, that's it ... a book. Actually, it's more like a magazine. A dirty magazine. Hustler's Taboo to be specific. But some pages are stuck together and ... uh ...

What were we talking about again?

I know I have much to learn. But I also think everyone is getting way too personal with their attacks on me, when all I did was rant about my hatred of anime.

Had someone made a topic... let's see, "Video game haters!" I may quietly read it. I won't call whoever made the topic immature and get all pissy though. Especially if they had a warning that it was going to get a little aggressive.

If you people really want to argue.... I can get nasty. I don't want to. I haven't offended anyone specifically, because I'm not into starting bullshit with certain persons. It's entirely possible though.... especially given the frequency and vehemence of some of these rebuttals, periodically through a saturday.

Why don't you all just chill the fuck down and accept peace when I offer it?

So, you start by saying your comments are going to be "aggressive" but you somehow expect everyone to just cosign them and leave it at that? Don't be "aggressive" if you don't want that kind of response. And making sweeping generalizations about pretty much anything is likely to annoy people even if your statement is made in a non-inflammatory way. And as for not knowing that anime/manga are important to some of us, I guess you overlooked the fact that there are several threads devoted to discussing the genre and posting images from it.

As for "personal attacks", I see maybe two comments that could be construed as such... most people simply expressed curiosity and bemusement as to why you seem so obssessive about something that doesn't really affect you, or made observations about your age and presumed lack of experience. And what is there to argue about? You made a statement, people responded. That is not arguing, it is exchange of ideas... which is really what this milieu is all about.

As a piece of genuine advice, I wouldn't recommend getting "nasty". That kind of thing is not often tolerated here.

I like anime. I'm not into it as much as I was when I was younger (a lot of it does seem to cutesy to me now), but it makes for good fun and entertainment, better than most american tv shows IMO.

*Continues to hope for a second season of Berserk...*
