Competing Nights at Clubs

I'm probably goin to Necto, but if I did go, where's parking?

I have to say, too: Why Monday? Necto is a great club, I generally have no objections to their music, etc. Why compete when there are other days of the week that don't really have anything going on?

He covered it earlier in the thread, Monday was the only night the club owner would do it.

Hell, fuck Necto, not only have I never been there I can now say that I would NEVER go due to the fact that it's an hour from here.

The only night to do it at one club out of many in town... doesn't seem like a particularly compelling reason to me. Swankier? If I wanted swanky, I wouldn't be hanging with the crowd that I do. And your dissing Necto when you've never been there?

I overheard some people at Necto from one production company, disparaging people from another within the same culture. There's not enough people in town to be fracturing the scene into tiny little pieces. No one will make money that way. It makes no sense to me to compete head to head with an established night. Give us more choices on alternative nights so we can go out, and enjoy the scene on any given night.

I love ya sweety but as you have Never been to Necto you are way off base here. We are much nicer/swankier than Prive. I went in there last week the entire club would fit on our danceflooor and bar area. We are much larger have MUCH better sound and lights. I'm sure once you see the size of the place you'll see why we're not worried.

I know, but eastside peoples hate Necto due to its ONE HOUR AWAY Ann Arbor location.

I'm NOT driving an hour for any club that doesn't have clowns and a rollercoaster with three free long islands and no cover. End of story.

So that's why Necto and I aren't good friends, for the record. It would cost me straight up at least $20 to get out there in the first place and it's not like CC/Luna where you could take a bus down and back if you had to.

if the downtown and detroit suburb crowd end up at Prive, because it's closer, and gas is an issue now,

then thats...what...a good third of Necto's crowd...if not more??

I am getting sick of hearing this....personally....I would never go to Necto except once....not because of it's distance...but because the ppl that I know that go there....most of them are losers and assholes.....I'm not saying EVERYONE that goes to Necto is...but the most of the ppl I know that go are.....I would go once to check it out....but with some of their promotional personal acting like it's some "hot shot" club....I might not go just for that.

I know places in Toledo that would swallow Necto alive...but I don't run onto the Necto threads and tell the ppl there that Necto will be a failure....thats not right, and it needs to stop....and I am APPALLED and SHOCKED that the mods haven't said something to this degree before...

In the Necto on Monday and last Monday we had 2 people who had identified themselves as promoters for prive lounge walking around Necto telling people a much better bar as opening next week and that we suck. Along with some other bullshit that I won't go into here. We know this for a fact because one of the people the promoters were trashing us too happened to be 2 off duty employee's. Not a Single person from the Necto has posted or said anything Negative about this new night. I did point out it was smaller with less sound lights and dancefloor size. That is not being negative it's being honest.

We had no ill feeelings towards them. It was simple buisness. We had and still have no intention to compete by trashing this place sadly unlike what we've seen from them. We would rather compete by continuing to offer the best product we possibly can. Such as Combichrist for $3 on the 16th and Free Cd's, Shirts and $100 and $50 cash for 1st place and 2nd place in our coustume contest this Monday. Understand we are going to compete but by offering you more.

Now to my main point!They made it personal by trashing us and Offering free admission to their bar with OUR passes. If they were not trying to compete directly with us Head to head. Why Offer Free admission with our passes and not any other bar. We're doing between 500 - 600 people every week from all over the MI and OH. Some from metro Detroit but nowhere near a 1/3. So if you know some losers who go you would probably see so many more who where cool. Hell you'de probably make soem new friends. You should check us out. None of us has ever said privatly or publicaly said They would never be as good. All I said as the place is much smaller,21 and up and listing they are playing Techno,Trance, and industrial it's not the same music format as us. Thats why I'm not worried, it's not really the same crowd not that they are going to fail.

Yes...you are right...their employees doing that was COMPLETELY tastless....and now I have to admit that I am re-considering going...but...there are people that are already expecting me...so I will be there.

however....there seems to be some changes made in their promotion ethics...

This relates to the thread on Asylum night at Prive Lounge the fact that it's being started on a night there is already a strong and established scene at another club (Necto). I'm not here advocating that no other goth/industrial type event shouldn't be held on the same night as some other established event. City Club and Mephisto's, for instance, are open on the same nights. The thing is, each serves a little different purpose and so you might go to one when you're feeling a particular way and the other, for something else. Prive Lounge sounds like it will be hosting a night EXACTLY like Necto. Most likely the established club will keep most of it's crowd and the other will die a quick death. But the possibility is exists that the new club will draw enough people to cause both too fail because neither will get the kinds of consistent numbers needed to keep the club alive. There's not that many of us in the area. So what's the point? Ego? Stubborn? Trying to prove a point?

I guess part of my annoyance with this situation in particular is that it relates to other comments and statements I've heard recently regarding the scene in SE Michigan. It seems like people are going out of their way to splinter it because of personal differences. The more animosity and drama that gets perpetuated between these different groups, the less likely it is that any one of them will be successful. Numbers count, in business. Plain and simple. And we don't have enough to be competing and hating each other.

OK. I'm not trying to stir up a bunch of drama over this. I'm just pointing out some very real and practical issues. And I don't see how this sort of discussion shouldn't be allowed in the thread. It directly relates. So...

1. An hour may seem like a long way but it's still well within many people's comfort zone to travel for an evening's entertainment. You're drawing from the same small subculture on the same night. If you don't see yourself as competing, I don't know how you call yourself an astute business person. It is. Period. Hell yeah I wouldn't mind a shorter drive, but not at the expense of small crowds. There's a critical mass of people that just makes the an evening more enjoyable.

2. I understand the issue of it being the only night that that particular club will make available. It's the same everywhere. We're a small minority of club goers. We get table scraps except at a place like City Club where it was developed for people like us many years ago. Why use that club then? Explain what's so compelling about this place that it's worth my while to change from someplace I like (And many others do too) to someplace I don't know a thing about. Free stuff on opening night is one thing. What's going to make it worth my while to come back again and again? Secret mystery stuff ain't it.

3. I don't know that this club won't be as good, and I never said that. BUT, since you're competing with an established club with an established night, you've just added to the already daunting odds that it will be successful. I've watched a number of good venues with great DJ's go down in flames on NON-competing nights. I'm not sure why the crowds didn't come out. Switch especially at Clutch. I loved the atmosphere... it was perfect for the crowd, plenty of space, etc. Thursday nights are often decent elsewhere. But it fizzled.

And... calling people assholes and losers is not going to win you many friends or new costumers.

I may show up to check things out.. because I try not to judge before I've experienced something.

Nobody with our website or the staff has bad mouthed the necto. there are only two promoters and neither one of us has been to the necto since you guys kicked my partner out and said you reasons were because she was handing out flyers which she didnt have any on her. there are about 6 models that live in ann arbor and have flyers. Also I love the necto as well as my partner so to accuses us on a tasteless act is an insult. well I have had about 50 people ask me if they could use there pass to the necto that live in Detroit to get in to the prive so I said sure why not as well as the necto is more than welcome to use our passes for free admission. Also I was going to go to the necto last week just to hang out all promoting aside and just have some fun but I was told that myself and my staff were not allowed to come in. but all bs he said she said childish crap aside. I own the company and if you have a problem come straight to me and I will deal with it. there is no reason for childish games. not saying that the necto is being childish I just mean as a whole. also there were models that night that took it upon there selves to take flyers into your club and when you sent me a message about it I told them if I find out they do it again the will no longer but models for me.

I will say that there is an attitude in SE Michigan that I have seen no-where else in the US, when it comes to bands and entertainment....and that is an East/West hatred...wheither it be clubs, bands, etc

East side clubs care little for West side bands and talent....and the same goes for opposite.

The same also goes for fans/ people.

It's a wall that needs to be taken down....As an local promoter and booking agent...my area is eastside/ suburbs....but I do very decently with the few west-side clubs I have done business with, more so then the east side clubs...and am looking to expand my reach in that area.....there are TONS of promoters that a SCARED to do so, because they don't feel they can make the money, when in reality it's because they don't have the musical artillary to do so.

I know gas sucks...and the economy sucks....I understand this...but this wall HAS to go...it's been up for over 20 years from what I understand...and if the fans/ people and the new blood of local agents don't make an effort to tear it down...then gods know when it will be broken.

There is NOTHING wrong with some HEALTHY competition.....but don't feel that just because a club that is JUST within an hours drive of you is trying to run you to the ground...instead...wait to see if they get a nice crowd...and THEN make a call...and see what can be done about some kind of "joint" effort for some larger event....it would be nice...I doubt I'll ever see it...but it would be nice.

Basically compitition is good for the customer as long as it is honest...

If Gothklub A has had a night for a while with no competition.... the club starts to slack on repair/music/staff... but when Gothklub B opens up... all of a sudden the atmosphere at Gothklub A gets better because now they have a reason.

The 'scene' keeps getting more popular with a wider range of people, and so there is demand for more variety.....

This more broad spectrum of people causes more drama, because the normies who want to be freaky don't really like us, they just want to be cool like us.....

I know that seems like a childish way to put it, but it is what I see.....

There is no more refuge for people like Me in the Detroit area, all those places are filled with douche bags and dildos.....

So get used to it kids, it is the law of supply+demand.....
