[Saint Germain]

Wave-Gotik-Treffen (ger. das Treffen means "the meeting") is an annual festival for music and arts in Leipzig, Germany. 150+ bands and artists from various backgrounds (Gothic rock, EBM, Darkwave, Neofolk, Neoclassical, Noise, Medieval Music, Experimental and Deathrock being examples) play at several venues throughout the city over 4 days on Whitsuntide. The festival also features several fairs with medieval, gothic and cultural merchandise.

With its regular 25,000 attendants (unofficially up to 30,000), the WGT is the largest event of the Goth subculture worldwide, closely followed by the annual M'era Luna festival in Hildesheim, Germany with 20,000-25,000 attendants.

The major attraction of the Wave-Gotik Treffen is the band performances. Generally, the number of musical acts is close to 200, spanning the breadth of "dark music" from acoustic folk to Medieval-influence to deathrock to elektro/EBM/industrial. The dozen-or-more venues are equally varied, from the stately Schauspielhaus to the somber Krypta of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal to the Parkbühne under the trees to the massive 10,000-person capacity AGRA fairground halls.

In addition, there are Renaissance fairs, Viking and Pagan markets, CD/DVD and film premieres, literary readings, artist signing events, brunches celebrating Absinthe, and many late-night danceclubs with top-name DJs. The main market in the AGRA that runs the entire duration of the festival is perhaps the largest for the goth community anywhere in the world.

Since 2006 I'm now every year at Leipzip to the WGT and, believe me, it's one of the greatest times for me in the year

The time before I always was perpetual nagging about this event like "bah, someting for the masses! to much gothicbarbies and cursory people" bla, bla... Till a good friend of mine felt sick of my idle talk and sad to me: "girl, first have a look at WGT and THEN talk about it!"

So I went first time at 2006 to Leipzig and I was exalted! *g* It's such a wonderful event! It's not only the wide spread offering of different music and concerts - ist also the mediaval market, the partys all over Leizpig in the five nights from thursday till monday, it's the theatre and opera (this year I saw among other things "La Traviata" at Leipzig Opera, wow!), movies, exhibishions of gothic art, readings, and at least all the interesting people.

At this time Leipzig is totally black *g* The native "Leipziger" is definitely the minority and follows the gothically goings with one little contained eye and one big friendly and amused eye

Never ever will miss WGT in the next years

I think there was a little meeting of some independent gothics at the year 1989, the next years followed many nominal-members (correct word? *g*) and at least there was a very good business idea. In germany there is a big discussion about the wgt. Many people say it is to much geared towards pure consume.
