Looking For A Dj To Co-resident

Recommended Posts

i'm looking for a dj to co-resident with me @ a new thursday weekly called censor staring august 16th.

requirements:

have a pretty vast collection as the music thursdays will cover a large amount of musical ground.

mixing skills are not an issue, just know your way around a mixer, etc.

be willing to help with some promo.

and most importantly, NO EGO, i prefer to work with someone mellow & down to earth.

just because you can beatmatch/mix 4(maybe 8) measures of some of some tact-sekt,vnv,combi,etc doesnt mean a thing in the real world, i deal wih enough ego in the techno, house, etc scene.

long story short...

be cool & know your shit.

anyone interested please email me

Can you be a little more specific on what kind of musical ground the night will cover, or is it a total free-for-all where I can finally realize my dream of hearing Hank Williams III and Bach mixed together?

Nothing against Bach or Hank, but i was thinking more along the lines of music that will appeal to people who wear black, but only shop at hot topic because they dont have a choice.

I'm not looking for someone to play an hour of oontz.

Of course there will be stuff like Combi,VNV,Suicide Commando, etc, but you will also hear a lot of old skool industrial. Wax Trax era stuff, puppy, old ebm & elektro like 242,Leather Strip,Mentallo & the Fixer, etc plus some stuff like DAF,Neubauten,Coil. also there will be old & new goth, sisters, nosferatu, london after midnight, cruxshadows, etc. & finally some darker 80's like The Cure,Depeche,Clan of Xymox/Xymox,etc.

ok first for the comment... refering to "people who wear black".... what an insult that is. Johnny Cash wore black, Roy Orbinson wore black.... Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, Stevie Nicks, Peter Murphy, Joan Jett, Chris Robinson, Garth Brooks, The Ramones, The Romantics,... shall I go on? doesnt mean it makes you goth or into gothic or industrial style music because you wear black clothing. and as for shopping at Hot Topic i can name a ton of other places better to go, or even the people who "feel the need" to shop there Make your own clothing then if its that much of a insult to the Goth community to shop there. considering that Hot Topic, well at least at one time, was owned and operated by the GAP.

I totally understand what your trying to do with your new club night, but not to be rude, But I have already started running a night similar to what your attempting to do & i dont know about anyone else but that comment would totally turn me off to even consider giving it a chance.

you should probably re-read my post, you took it the wrong way.

how is saying the night is for people who wear black an insult?

also, when it comes to my comment on hot topic the proper quote is...

"but only shop at hot topic because they dont have a choice", not what you posted which is "feel the need"

what i meant by that is, there are people out there who may only have access to hot topic as their source for "goth" clothing. the comment was not a diss on people who shop at hot topic, but a stab at hot topic.

i have seen the playlists from your night, maybe the 1st hour or so the nights may be similar, but after that they won't be. you guys play a lot of metal, plus 8 or more manson songs a night, which is fine if you're in to that.

i won't be playing stuff like that.

i can understand why you would try to start some web drama, but there's no need to.

let the people go out, hear the muzik, & decide.

for starters.... dont think im trying to start any drama of any kind, that was not my intention.

thats the problem when your talking to someone via internet, you cant here the tone in someones voice to convey the intention behind the sentence.

and maybe i did read your comment about black clothing wrong, but i am saying is that it was perceived by me as stating, that all people who wear black clothing are goth, which is a sterotype! and also what i was saying about hot topic was not defending them, is was a stab at them as well.

and as for our playlist, we probably do play a bit more metal then we should, & Manson.... if you notice alot of those are requested. we have a very diverse crowd in our venue, so that tends to happen sometimes, but to face the facts, we get more people up dancing to fimilar tunes then driving them out with the obscure. let face as much as we enjoy the scene, the music & especially the people, there is business to be conducted.

Really i can tell he didn't mean it that way. I'm a huge fan of almost everyone you listed off, and i wear black...

Honestly i can tell he meant it just more as a "appeal to the goth/industro scene" sentiment not a dig or insult to "other" people that also wear black.

I never meant to make that into a big production, again not my intention. what i was debating with him was his intention behind that statement, if he meant "appeal to the goth/industro scene" then why wasnt it worded as such.

I would think that if he was on a site specialized, such as DGN, i would think that he wouldnt just throw a generalized statement such as" people who wear black" , out there.

im not saying that he meant it as an insult to people who wear black, I saw it as sterotyping the gothic community, so thats why i listed all the names of artists of other genres who also wear black.

and i hope none of this was taken the wrong way, as vendictiveness toward his new venture, in fact i wish him the best of luck, and if schedule would allow, I would be in attendence.

Unfortunately we all have different methods of communication and levels of "clarity" when making that communication. Gets confused/confusing sometimes as to what the actual intent was.

I can tell both of you are friendly people and care enough to take the time to explain your point in more detail as seen above. If you didn't care you wouldn't have taken the time. :flower:

... we get more people up dancing to fimilar tunes then driving them out with the obscure.

Interesting statement and having DJ'ed at nearly every industrial night (Luna, Necto, Mephistos, the old Cavern Club nights, etc...) I can agree that the 'recognizeable' is what gets most people going yet equally boring many club goers too.

It's very rare these days to hear much difference between clubs. Seems every industrial DJ is kinda dipping into the same 'selections' of tracks. Few local DJ's out there taking risk and experimenting with NEW things. I'd certainly embrace a night that offered up something more "obscure" than the usual and familiar. A DJ could certainly turn my head by experimenting with acts suchs as Edgey, Outside Agency, Menticide, Alter Der Ruine, Phantom West, Lassigue Bendthaus, Blank, Motor, Adam Beyer, Ah Cama Sotz, Warp Brothers, Negative Format, Heliosphere, Mortis, Spetsnaz, Mlada Fronta, Mnemonic and a zillion others just as examples.

Funny that DJ's like Richie Hawtin and say maybe Ferry Corsten are known as TECHNO dj's but one plays minimal and the other trance. If you're an industrial DJ in Detroit it seems you are 'expected' to have and play Rotersand, Assemblage23, VNV, etc... You don't really find further descriptors on Detroit industrial dj's - like industrial metal, noise dj, electroclash dj.

Truthfully, I'm kinda put-off by going to clubs due to lack of musical progression and dj's who play it safe. Theres a few dj's locally that still impress me (Noble, Meta, Pleasurekitten, J9). Business or not, a good DJ can and SHOULD be able to drop new tracks, mix the old with the new and read a crowds reaction. Bring on the new stuff. Change is good.

Anyways, just my own observation - I don't want this to turn into a debate on "The DJ's should play..."

So long as everyones having fun is all that matters.

be well

You just turned it into a debate! j/k. Interesting read, would be a good discussion to start up elsewhere.

Looking forward to hearing more about this night! Let's get some details! Will try to make it out if I can.

Honestly in a club setting you have to realize its first and foremost a business, not a musical education or "latest release" center. You can throw your more lesser known stuff in there now and again, but if the place is dead (so to speak) it doesn't matter how adcademicly impressive the playlists are.

Unless some other income source or an amazing promo engine is taking up the slack "unpopular" play listing loses the club money and may eventually kill the place all together. Certain clubs have such a strong historical following that they can slide on this and survive a few DJs that don't realize their job is to make the club money first and foremost. But many clubs cannot, and a "new" club night never could pull that for long without the above mentioned "other people" picking up the slack.

In a club context, Its not about the more jaded patrons (like myself), its about the majority of the patrons musical preferences that are actually footing the bills. The small minority of people that would complain about a kick-ass (but overplayed) series of sets is in the VAST minority, although they tend to be a bit more vocal. Especially on DGN as this is were the more jaded folk are at. I like the "jaded" (read more educated) musical mindset, but it dosn't "play well" at a club.

I don't LIKE that, but its a reality regardless. I've long intentionally shyed away from club DJing as i am very clear on the fact that it is a business and I'd have to play what "the masses" want (even if they dont know they want it just yet) and it might be a bit too restrictive for me. (that and the fact that between DGN , my health and now the radio station when i'd have time to DJ i don't know heh)

no debating here, just my opinion/rant =)

when it comes to "goth" clubs you have to create a balance of keeping the customers happy & exposing them to new/different music. as anyone dj out there knows, you will always get hit up with the requests for vnv,combi,a23,wolfsheim,etc. it's the throwing in different stuff inbetween that matters. thats how you create new club anthems. for censor i am not going for that philosophy. im not saying that i will not take requests, but @ censor the music will defintely be different. sure there will be some of the standards, BUT i plan on trying my best not to play any of the same songs 2 weeks in a row.

example: if someone requests vnv "chrome" one week, i will not play it the next.

i WONT play marilyn manson,tool,korn,evenesance,etc.

did people forget that skinny puppy has other songs besides pro-test & assimilate?

for 4 years i ran my weekly nokturna sundays out here in upstate ny (tonights my last night)

and i played the put on the plastic smile, knod, and play the same crap every week game for too long.

maybe there's some people who share these feeling, maybe not, we shall see.

...end rant

Thank You Troy! I think you have summed it up beautifully. I would like our setlist to get a little more obsure, and diverse, but being in the business end of it, its not exactly what i want to hear but what my audience wants to hear.

In this case, I nominate DJ Saint :D He would be the perfect candidate for a night that tries to focus on the progression of music and not the top 40 dancefloor hits. Good luck with the night, the majority of the people want the same songs every week, and it will be difficult to manage with a bunch of people wanting to hear the regular songs.
