I hate it because it's so contrived and so over-commercialized. I feel like boycotting it just for that reason (but I admit I caved in just a bit).

I like doing little things all the time for those I care about. No need to wait for a holiday.

The Valentines Day massacure is called that because it happened to have fallen on the holiday. They two things have nothing else in common.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

i don't understand why people hate valentine's day so much. if you don't like it- then don't celebrate it.

if you are a person who needs a "reminder" to appreciate the one you are with then valentine's day is a nice "excuse".

if you are someone that does it all the time randomly and don't need a holiday to do it- then so be it.

i don't care so much about v.d. since i have been married for almost 6 years and my husband has only actually done something for that day i think 2 times. so whatever.

it is like any other holiday- x-mas, halloween, fourth of july, father's day, st. patrick's day.... just a reason to celebrate something or appreciate someone.

i have seen more HATE for the "holiday" than anything else. i just don't get it.

We never rally celebrated it much until recently.

I guess we didn't feel the need to.

But the kids like it.

One year when my daughter was about 7 my husband brought home a giant box of chocolates. one for her and one for me. now he's stuck buying them! But it means alot to the kids.

We don't go out of our way to do anything for Valentine's day. Truth is, we usually just don't have the $$ to do things like go to dinner, buy flowers, etc.

It doesn't help that my birthday comes less than 2 weeks after, so if any $$ is going to be spent on anything, it'll be my birthday.

I usually get a heart-shaped box of Russell Stover chocolates and a card. I actually would like to make more of a deal out of the day, but practicality just doesn't allow.

The only thing I really need, though, is some kind of hand-written note or something from my husband. The rest is nice if I can get it, but those notes mean a lot more to me.

this is one of those holidays where we never have any $$$ so i goes by with a note or maybe one of those $2.00 roses ya get at the gas station...... nothing real big...... it is one of those holidays where i think it is more important to those who are not married or dont have kids... i dont know maybe it just doesn't seem important to me in the bigger scheme of things :ermm:

i don't think it is important either. and really i do hate going out on that day- everything is so crowded (resturants usually). and i don't get gifts so who cares. :p

i just never get why people hate holidays, any holiday, so much.

i mean i guess i can understand for those that actually DO like the holiday but are alone or broken hearted. but i know people who hate just about every holiday and what it stands for and that i just don't get. this post got me thinking about that.
