Green Day's American Idiot inspires rock musical

Pop-punk trio Green Day, comprising, from left, Mike Dirnt, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Tré Cool, will see their hit album American Idiot transformed into a stage musical. (Tina Fineberg/Associated Press)American Idiot, pop-punk band Green Day's Grammy Award-winning 2004 concept album, is set to become a rock musical in the trio's Berkeley, Calif. home turf.

Band frontman Billy Joe Armstrong collaborated on the production's story with Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening.

The band had "been thinking of bringing American Idiot to the stage but knew we needed to find the right partners," Armstrong said in a statement.

"We were so impressed with [spring Awakening] as well as [Mayer's] vision for American Idiot that we knew we'd found the perfect collaborator."

The musical, to open in September at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, will feature songs from American Idiot — including hit tracks Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday and Wake Me Up When September Ends — as well as numbers from the band's upcoming album 21st Century Breakdown, set for release in May.

Book follows disillusioned characters

Released in 2004, American Idiot has sold about 12 million copies worldwide and won a number of Grammy awards, including a trophy for album of the year and a record of the year win for the track Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Loosely based on the disillusioned characters depicted in the album's lyrics, the stage musical will follow a number of young suburbanites who choose different paths in life, from fighting in Iraq to spiralling into drug addiction to staying put in one's hometown.

The company will feature 19 performers, with Olivier Award-winner Steven Hoggett enlisted as choreographer.

The production was workshopped recently in New York and is set to run Sept. 4 through Oct. 11 as the opener for Berkeley Rep's 2009-2010 season

I love music - I loathe musicals. :X

They just annoy me, especially "fight" scenes that break out into song and dance ------ WTF!!!!!!

How can you take a tough guy/villian serious when instead of kicking ass he's tap dancing and twirling around on his toes?? :X:X

    • What If I actually finish my Masters degree? Like what if I don't screw up? I mean I am almost half way finished. The part that scares me is the amount of money that it costs and the fact I have to do an internship the last two semesters,  I mean I have burned some bridges in the field um, lots of bridges like I'm cool with people from Jobs I've quit though but this field I been kinda medically retired and it sucks, I want to try and fix myself..my health has improved a lot but I'm still crazy as hell. My bf was impressed because when he first met me we was drinking one night and I was being a goof as I do but all of a sudden my mom's friend called me and wanted me to help her with a situation involving her son and the court system and I immediately sobered up and told her what they should expect and what they could do and my bf was like,  wow, you just snapped right into business like no problem.  I was like yea, I'm not completely crazy yet. Lol Ok ramble over. I'm killing time until this Midnite and Nyquil kick in.
    • The poor lady across the hall is elderly and lives all alone. She has a cat at least one that I seen on her balcony (we had a staring contest) Anyway, the cat piss stench permeates all the way through the door into the hall and into our apartment.  It's so bad like concerningly so. She is very independent, seems very sweet but I don't think she'll allow me to help her out because one day she was trying to get up the stairs with a couple bags and I offered to help but she thanked me very gratefully and said she was OK. I don't want to say anything about the smell and my bf is nose blind and only noticed because I pointed it out.  The smell though..I hate seeing elderly people who have noone😢
