Dreads

Recommended Posts

I just got dreads and I was asking around for tips and most people say do nothing and some say sleep with a scarf on my head. Some people say you can get them wet and others say you cant can a girl get a little help over here. They are synthetic extensions so no natural hair advice.

You definately need to care for your dreads, especially if they are synth extensions. You should wash your hair only once or twice a week. With the dreads you also need to keep twisting and rolling them so they stay locked, but be careful where your natural hair and synth meet. Sleeping with a scarf around your head is also a good idea just to keep the dreads in good condition.

There are shampoos especially made for dreads and for synth hair, you should check those out.

How would I go about twisting them to keep them looking fresh? Do I use products or a certain technique?

You just use your hands to twist them, turning them clockwise. Toward the root of your hair use mostly your figertips, as you get more toward the body and tip of the dread roll it in the palm of your hand with your fingers. The natural oil of your hands will help lock the dread if you twist daily. There are a couple of different waxes or creams you can use to help lock the dreads.

Here are some websites that have alot of great info

I make synth dreads so I'm pretty good at getting 'em to stay. If you're at CC tonight like your signature says, I'll actually be wearing my yellow/black ones that I've never worn out before, so feel free to come say hi :).

What you can do is you can re-seal them. With synthetic dreads in order to get them to stay not only is the dreading important but the heat sealing is crucial. Dreads that aren't heat sealed come out quickly, it literally gets them to lightly mold in place since the fiber is plastic so they keep, and also this will cut down on massive frizzies.

If you'd like, just twist them so they're tight (like put your thumb and index finger at the end of the dread, not at the root, and twist). Then hold the dread away from your head (as hard as you can pull without pulling the dread out) and blow dry the dreads individually that way on the highest setting for your hair dryer. Try to be even about it and get all the way around because that reduces frizzies. Then once you're done blow drying, keep it held from your head still twisted in between your thumb and index finger. Once it cools, let it go, and you're all set.

Also, to keep in mind, synth dreads don't last as long as real dreads. Just doesn't usually happen unless you're THAT good.
