House of Voices - again, being a Pascal Laugier fan, i'm sure you've seen that too. 4. Session 9 - one of my favorite movies. DO IT GORDON 5. Tale of Two Sisters - the original Japanese version. aaaaand......i'm drawing a blank. now i'm curious though and i'll have to look through our collection when i get home.

Another brillant parent

this is why i am convinced Idiocracy was a documentary. -
for what it's worth, Splice was OK. Not fantastic, not earth shattering, but adequate. Certainly not terrible. I think it would have done better if instead of ripping off (or a huge homage, however you feel about that kind of thing) Cronenberg, they just let Cronenberg direct it. THEN, it would have been epic. as it stands, the director did an okay job. the cinematographer was very skilled, and the opening reel was very nicely done, but it kind of fell flat with a lot of static shots and same old same old kind of feel half way through. all in all definately worth checking out, but watch before you buy.

candyman - well said. i understand your point, and while i don't agree with it, i can respect where you are coming from. since when are soldiers not allowed to bring personal gear? a good friend of mine was detroit SWAT, and was allowed to have his own vest shipped over. although now that i think of it, that was at the beginning of the invasion, so a lot may have changed. i've heard plenty of stories of hillbilly armor.
-
i was going to break it down point by point and counter-argue, but i don't really care that much. instead, i will just reiterate my main point, the military represents the will of the american people. i am an american person. therefore, it IS my business. i will voice my opinion as i see fit. however, i do agree with you that DADT is a small concern when you are having issues with your gear, and proper armor. that is about the only thing we can agree on. leave it to the american people to be so easily lead astray by fashionable news/entertainment. the soldiers you describe are only confirming my opinion that Idiocracy is a documentary. but honestly, if most soldiers act and think they way that you portray them, maybe it's darwinism that there isn't enough armor to go around. a happy accident? my suggestion to you, as you seem at least mostly intelligent, or at least minimally able to think for yourself, is to take some armor with you next time you go over seas...as im finding it hard to give a fuck about the safety of the soldiers you are describing. good luck soldier, write me from the next third world country you invade.
-
also, i'm having a hell of a time finding a dread tam. any ideas? i've checked all the hippy stores i could find around, and just got blank, stoned stares. and to add, i'm really looking for a black one, i'm not a hippy in the least so rastafarian colors and at tan ones are out.
-
i completely agree with you needing better armor. that is unacceptable. there is no excuse for you not having proper protection. i've lost friends in this bullshit war, and maybe they would be around if they had the proper protection, so i'm with you on that. whoa, ease up there fella. i think your blood pressure is getting a little high over this discussion. for the record, gaga is an idiot. a creepy idiot. why are you so afraid of knowing if the woman fighting next to you is gay? are you afraid a gay man might look at your ass? look, i've seen hot ass women in combat gear and they look like teletubbies, so don't flatter yourself. i have yet to hear ONE.....ONE good reason from a soldier why they need DADT. not one. every conversation i have with a 'soldier' is countered by SHUT THE FUCK UP. never by a *reasonable* argument. So it'll cause more problems because the army is full of rednecks? well that seems like a problem with recruitment, not gays. lets break it down. you're saying that we shouldn't allow openly gay people into the military because bigoted assholes will want to beat on them? are you the same guy that says a woman who dresses provocatively 'deserves it'? so we are supposed to suppress the sexual preference of our gay heroes, because you and your friends might not be able to handle that? you're telling me that combat veterans, that are trained to make life and death situations, that are responsible for upholding our freedom and the freedom of the entire world, soldiers that are given access to millions of dollars of equipment and are trained with millions of tax payers dollars, soldiers that are entrusted with the very essence of American Freedom, can't handle that the woman next to them might be attracted to other women? really, that's just sad. i'm not liberal and i'm not a progressive....i didn't send you to this war, sir. it was the fucking politicians, religious leaders and right wing talk show hosts that you are parroting, that sent you to this war. your friends aren't dying for me. they aren't even dying for america. they are dying for GREED. pure and simple. but hey, keep spreading that hillbilly american dream abroad by showing the world how ignorant and intolerant we really are.

kind of like non-muslim people deciding what policies to enact in a muslim nation? i think you need to come down off that high horse, candyman. don't forget sir, WE pay your salary. The people pay you. we DO have a say in what OUR military does in OUR name, with OUR money. and if you want a 'professional soldiers' opinion look no further than Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen : "Speaking for myself and myself only, it is my personal belief that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do. No matter how I look at this issue I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens For me personally it comes down to integrity, theirs as individuals and ours as an institution. I also believe that the great young men and women accomodate such a change. I never underestimate their ability to adapt.” Gaf, for once i completely agree with you. well said, sir.

Martyrs Remake!?!?!?!?
LoTek replied to DJ Nocker's topic in Movies, Books, Art, TV, Gaming and Computers
This makes me sad on so many levels. Being a jaded horror fan, i thought i could no longer be shocked, that i had seen it all. i was soooo wrong. Martyrs left me speechless, and horrified, and wounded me deep inside my brain. i loved every second of it. the first reel, i thought 'Ooooh, so it's THIS kind of movie', only to be sucker punched in my apathy. then i thought "oh, OK, i see where it's going now" only to yet again be ninja kicked in my contempt. then with the final reel, as i sat slack jawed and probably a little hard, the movie ended with a brain shattering climax that i have not seen in far...FAR too long. i. loved. this. film. the ending was spectacular. i will not spoil it for anyone, but my equally jaded wife and i discussed it for days. they didn't spoon feed you anything, they left a lot up in the air, and it dealt with enough transcendance and death and life and spirituality and sadism that we STILL talk about it. we've shown it to all of our friends and they all had pretty much the same response. the thought of them tampering with this film, of 'dumbing it down for americans' is so blasphemous, so horrifying that it makes me want to hunt down those responsible. they are doing the same thing to Let The Right One In. i understand the argument that 'all remakes suck' as being pretentious and a little reactionary. but the truth is, it's true. as a film student, i view film as ART, not commerce...too many hollywood studios disagree. when they remake a foreign film for american audiences that are too lazy and/or stupid to read subtitles, they inevitable wring every ounce of originality and suspense from the film in favor of SHOCK VALUE and whatever else is popular in america at the time. do yourself a favor and skip the remakes. every time you give those greedy, money hungry bastards your dollars, it encourages them to make more. to rape more perfect films with not art in mind, but the almighty dollar. they are already talking about remaking Argento...(gasp)...whats next, they're going to remake Umbrellas of Chernoburg with the Glee cast? Band of Outsiders with Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston? stop the madness people. learn to read. enjoy foreign films. -
Detroit In Ruins

for what it's worth, i watch about 15 minutes and switched over to Ghost Adventures, which is about the dumbest show i've ever seen. they lost me with the 'better to stop them here than in Ferndale' part. i'll stick with SVU.

i don't think it's so much a political correctness issue, as a human rights issue. [rant] and in regard to 'biased media'....that term is only ever used when the media says something bad about the republican party. when fox news spits biased and purposely deceitful information, it is never called 'biased media', it is 'fair and balanced', or the even more insane, 'voice of reason'. i think all journalism at this point is cowardly and ineffective. the problem is not with bias, the problem is that the advertisers control the media, giant corporations control the media, not the liberal left, or commies, or whatever you might think. the bottom line is the dollar. if a newspaper (do they still exist?) or a news-o-tainment program were to air something negative about one of their financial supporters, they would lose revenue. we can't have that. so many important stories are squashed by financial worries, that you can't even rely on 'teh media' to give you straight information anymore. bottom line, don't believe ANYTHING that you see or read from our media, right OR left. they are coerced by the government and by corporate sponsers. they are told how to slant articles and with what angle to approach a story. it is no longer journalism, it's entertainment. but really, that's what the american people want anyways, they don't want to be INFORMED....they want to be ENTERTAINED. [/end rant]

I can haz Anarchies?
LoTek replied to LoTek's topic in Current Events, Science, Spirituality, Politics, Religion & Sociology
I wasn't aware that i used V as a reference point for anarchism, i just pointed out that Alan Moore created V for Vendetta... and furthermore, what you are talking about is Guy Fawkes, not V. V had his own revenge fantasy going on, he just wore a fawkes mask. And things also change if you are referencing the graphic novel or the film adaptation. The wachowski brothers wrote V as more of a deranged freedom fighter, whereas in the graphic novel Moore wrote him as a clear cut anarchist, a point which moore took personally and used as a reason to distance himself from the film. Moore also never states whether V is doing the right thing or not, if he is acting on pure anarchistic inspiration...or if he is a mad man. he left that up to the reader to decide. so to sum up, i do and do not agree with your statement. to use Fawkes as a reference point for an anarchist argument would to be to completely misinterpret Fawkes, but the same could be said to using V in the same situation. i guess it depends on context. Although V was an unapologetic anarchist, his actions did not necessarily reflect that, there is a liberal amount of madness in there. post script - i do like V a whole lot. but it IS a comic book, and i don't think he represents my viewpoints. blowing shit up is kind of neat though. -

I can haz Anarchies?
LoTek replied to LoTek's topic in Current Events, Science, Spirituality, Politics, Religion & Sociology
some short but interesting clips on anarchism by people i adore. alan moore, for those of you living under a rock, is a graphic novel GOD. responisble for V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Swamp Thing and a plethora of other intellectual goodies. Sean Herman is a fantastic Tattoo Artist and devout Anarchist. Coincidentally, he is the one who helped shape my current belief system. He travels the country, attending tattoo conventions to not only tattoo, but to hand out anarchist literature. the man is a hero. -
whoa-oh black betty, wham ba lam
