  3. Billions of snow crabs have disappeared from the waters around Alaska. Scientists say overfishing is not the cause The Alaska snow crab harvest has been canceled for the first time ever after billions of the crustaceans have disappeared from the cold, treacherous waters of the Bering Sea in recent years. The Alaska Board of Fisheries and North Pacific Fishery Management Council announced last week that the population of snow crab in the Bering Sea fell below the regulatory threshold to open up the fishery. But the actual numbers behind that decision are shocking: The snow crab population shrank from around 8 billion in 2018 to 1 billion in 2021, according to Benjamin Daly, a researcher with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. "Snow crab is by far the most abundant of all the Bering Sea crab species that is caught commercially," Daly told CNN. "So the shock and awe of many billions missing from the population is worth noting -- and that includes all the females and babies." The Bristol Bay red king crab harvest will also be closed for the second year in a row, the agencies announced. storyline continues https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/16/us/alaska-snow-crab-harvest-canceled-climate/index.html
  4. This beautifully designed 'dumb phone' can only make calls and send texts — and it might be the key to curing our addiction to apps Avery Hartmans Apr 8, 2019, 11:40 AM The Brooklyn-based startup Light has set an impossible goal of getting people to put down their smartphones. Light launched in 2014 and a year later debuted its first product, the Light Phone. It could only make calls and tell the time, and the company described it as a "quite a smart 'dumb' phone." Light intended for it to be something of a companion to your smartphone and a way to get people to leave their phones at home and go enjoy life. Now, Light is back with its second product, the Light Phone 2, an upgraded version of its phone that might just replace your smartphone for good. 5. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Loretta Lynn, who rose from a hardscrabble upbringing to become the most culturally significant female singer-songwriter in country music history, has died. She was 90. Lynn’s family said she died Tuesday at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. "Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning (Oct. 4) in her sleep at home at her beloved ranch," her family said in a statement provided to USA TODAY. Lynn was a mother of four when she launched her career in the early 1960s, and though many of her songs are filled with specifics of her wholly unique life, they had a universal appeal. She wrote about intimate matters – from her difficult, wearying childhood to fights with her husband – yet managed to strike a collective nerve. Without ever mentioning politics or women’s liberation, her 1960s and 1970s hits helped change long-held notions about gender roles. “Rated ‘X’ ” and “Don’t Come Home A Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” were personal pleas – not political treatises – that sought an end to double standards. Lynn did all this at a time when women were most often the voices through which men’s words and melodies were heard. She was Nashville’s first prominent woman to write and record her own material and was one of the first female music stars to generate her own hits. When she was set to receive her Kennedy Center Honor in 2003, Lynn told The (Nashville) Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network, that she wasn’t sure why people found her culture-shaking songs so remarkable. “Cultural contributions? What’s that?” she asked. “I was just sayin’ it like I was livin’ it. People’d go around that, but I went right through the middle.” She was the first woman named entertainer of the year at the genre’s two major awards shows, first by the Country Music Association in 1972 and then by the Academy of Country Music three years later. In her 1970 smash hit, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Lynn told the story of her upbringing, which helped her reach her widest audience yet. 6. Published Sept. 28, 2022 Updated Sept. 29, 2022, 12:17 p.m. ET Coolio, the rapper whose gritty and sometimes playful takes on West Coast rap and anthemic hits like “Gangsta’s Paradise” made him a hip-hop star in the 1990s, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 59. His manager, Jarez Posey, confirmed the death. Mr. Posey, who worked with Coolio for more than 20 years, said he was told that he died at a friend’s house. No cause was given. Coolio, whose legal name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr., achieved mainstream superstardom and critical success with his biggest hit, “Gangsta’s Paradise,” in 1995. A grim, minor-key track that featured the singer L.V. and drew on Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song “Pastime Paradise,” spent three weeks atop Billboard’s Hot 100 and was named the chart’s No. 1 song of the year. It won the Grammy for best rap solo performance in 1996 and was later certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, outshining the movie it was featured in, the high school drama “Dangerous Minds.” Story continued: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/28/arts/music/coolio-rapper-dead.amp.html#amp_tf=From %1%24s&aoh=16644701667047&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com

  18. Had a horrible nightmare. Couldn't escape the fire creature or the weird guy that I snatched the keys to the door from. I kept trying to close the door but couldn't get enough air in my lungs to focus. Woke up to find I was having a bad asthma attack. Felt like I was suffocating. Almost needless to say, I've been awake ever since. The sunrise was lovely.
